The evening was attended by the lead actors: Katharina Stark, Enno Trebs and Dominique Devenport, as well as director Annelie Boros and cinematographer Janne Ebel.
In the subsequent discussion with Sophie Anggawi (Bremen Zwei), the focus was on how Paula Modersohn-Becker’s life and work can be portrayed today. “There isn’t just one Paula Modersohn-Becker,” explained Annelie Boros. The film aims to explore the artist rather than provide a definitive answer as to who she was.
Lead actress Katharina Stark described the attitude she believed the audience should adopt when looking at Paula Modersohn-Becker: “With great curiosity, openness and perhaps a little less judgement.” The post-screening discussion made it clear just how much Paula Modersohn-Becker continues to inspire new perspectives, debates and interpretations, even 150 years after her birth.
To mark her 150th birthday, “Wer weiß schon, was ein Leben ist?” will be released in cinemas across Germany on 3 September 2026. The anniversary exhibitions on Paula Modersohn-Becker in Bremen and Worpswede have been extended until 1 November 2026 and will thus also coincide with the film’s cinema release. On 3 September, the film will celebrate its Munich premiere at the Rio Filmpalast. Following this, director Annelie Boros will embark on a cinema tour of Berlin, Leipzig, Hamburg and Oldenburg.

The premiere evening was organised in close collaboration between Kinescope Film and the distributor W-Film. The premiere was attended by representatives from the Worpswede Museum Network and the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum in Bremen, who are supporting the film during this anniversary year (150 years since Paula Modersohn-Becker’s birth).
